Every September somebody tells a new neighbor that the whole area shuts down for ACL. Two weekends, no parking, can't get out of your own street. Whether that's your October depends on where you sit relative to Azie Morton Road. Between Lamar and Azie Morton you get the barricades. West of Azie Morton you get the signs. Both are worth knowing before you buy.
The short version for 2026: festival weekends are October 2 to 4 and October 9 to 11. The Great Lawn is closed September 21 through October 18, and all seven Zilker parking lots close on staggered dates and stay closed through October 18. Barton Springs Pool stays open the whole time, reachable only through the Azie Morton Road entrance on festival weekends.
The Dates That Matter Before October
Park closures start earlier than the festival and end later. The Stratford lot goes first, on Monday, September 14. Pecan Grove and Polo Picnic follow on September 18, Rock Garden on September 23, and Disc Golf, Moonlight Tower and Playscape on September 28. All of them stay closed through Sunday, October 18.
The pre-event closure most likely to catch a resident is Saturday, September 26, when Barton Springs Road shuts entirely from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m. and then reopens with reduced eastbound lanes. That is a week before the first show. On the other end, load-out brings reduced lanes back to Barton Springs Road daily from Monday, October 12 through Friday, October 16, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with Stratford Drive on the same hours October 14 through 16.
If You Live in Zilker
The streets that close are your streets. Barton Springs Road closes to vehicle traffic at Sterzing, sending cars into a u-turn or right onto Sterzing toward South Lamar. The closure isn't a daytime window that lifts each night. The neighborhood association's notice has it closed through the park from 8 p.m. Thursday until midnight Sunday, both weekends, and the end of your road has a barricade with an officer on it and local access only.
If you're looking at a house between Lamar and Azie Morton, ask the seller how they handle October. The answer will tell you a lot. Most people who live there have made their peace with it: two weekends a year, a well-worn route out via South Lamar, and a rule about not planning anything that needs the car on a Saturday afternoon. Some love the festival and walk in. A few move. It is a genuine cost, and a known one.
If You Live in Barton Hills
Your closure is Azie Morton itself. It shuts between Barton Hills Drive and Barton Springs Road from 11 a.m. to midnight each festival day, with pool traffic let through to the south gate lot. That is the road most of the neighborhood uses to reach Barton Springs Road, and losing it is the single biggest change to how you get around in October.
Sterzing and Stratford get quoted a lot in neighborhood conversation, but neither is in Barton Hills. The Sterzing closure is at the Lamar end, in Zilker's corner. Stratford at Nature Center Drive is inside the park. They affect you only if the park is where you were going.
The other thing that reaches the interior streets is signage. No parking signs go up well before the first show and stay up through both weekends. The association's 2025 notice says signed areas are enforced on event days, Friday through Sunday. Treat them as live from the day they appear. A tow on a Thursday you weren't expecting is an expensive way to find out.
What Stays Open
The City's notice is specific about this. Barton Springs Pool, the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail, the Barton Creek Greenbelt, the Zilker disc golf course and the Zilker playscape all stay open through September and October.
Pool access changes, though. On festival weekends the pool is reachable only through the Azie Morton Road entrance, and the lot is reserved for swimmers, with no festival parking or drop-offs. Keep the pool's own schedule separate in your head as well: Barton Springs runs 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. and closes Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. for cleaning, festival or no festival. It is easy to blame ACL for a Thursday closure that was always going to happen.
The Zilker Botanical Garden lists both ACL weekends among its annual closures, alongside New Year's Day and Thanksgiving, so plan around those two weekends specifically. The Austin Nature and Science Center has historically followed the same pattern, but confirm its 2026 dates directly.
The Trailhead That Doesn't Know It's October
Walk to the Gus Fruh trailhead at 2632 Barton Hills Drive. It's the neighborhood's own entry to the Barton Creek Greenbelt, nowhere near the fence, the closures or the signs. Parks and Recreation points people there during ACL, alongside Spyglass and Hill of Life, so expect company and arrive early. The greenbelt doesn't know it's October. Neither does the creek.
What Comes Back Between the Weekends
The two weekends aren't one continuous 10-day siege, but the reprieve is narrower than the neighborhood shorthand suggests. Streets reopen in the week between. The parking lots and the Great Lawn do not. Both are closed straight through to October 18, so the mid-week gap gives you your roads back and nothing else.
If Something Is Wrong
The City routes neighborhood problems through 311, by phone or through the app, which lets you attach photos. Worth a call: a car within 30 feet of a stop sign approach, within 15 feet of a hydrant, parked against traffic, or across your driveway. Get the color, make and model first. Noise goes through 311 too. It's a small system and it works better when the calls are specific.
Two Neighborhoods, Two Octobers
Same festival, different lives, and the border between them is a single road. East of Azie Morton it's a fortnight of barricades and a long detour, and the people who stay have decided the other 50 weeks are worth it. West of it, it's one closed road, signs on the interior streets, and a pool that never shuts. Neither is a secret. Both are worth knowing before you fall for a house within earshot of the Great Lawn.
